Elderly Residents Targeted in Fake Bank Call Scam in West Delhi

admin 2 months ago folder Identity Theft diversity_2 Social Media

Residents in several neighborhoods of West Delhi have reported a surge in fraudulent phone calls targeting senior citizens. According to multiple complaints, scammers are posing as bank officials and claiming that the victim’s account has been blocked due to suspicious activity. The callers then pressure individuals into sharing sensitive information such as OTPs, debit card details, and PIN numbers.

One such incident involved a 68-year-old retiree who received a call early in the morning from someone claiming to represent a well-known bank. The caller sounded professional and even had basic details like the victim’s name and partial account number, which made the conversation appear legitimate. The victim was told that immediate action was required to prevent account suspension. Within minutes of sharing the OTP, a significant amount of money was withdrawn from their account.

Local authorities have emphasized that banks never ask for confidential information such as OTPs or PINs over phone calls. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, scammers continue to exploit fear and urgency to manipulate victims. In many cases, fraudsters use spoofed phone numbers to appear credible, making it even harder for unsuspecting individuals to identify the scam.

Cybercrime officials advise residents to remain cautious and verify any such claims directly with their bank’s official customer care number. They also recommend registering complaints immediately through the national cybercrime portal or by dialing the cyber helpline.

Community groups and resident welfare associations are now taking proactive steps to educate vulnerable populations about these scams. Workshops and awareness sessions are being organized to ensure that people, especially the elderly, are better equipped to recognize and avoid such fraudulent schemes.
